Direct Shift Gearbox or DSG transmission is a type of manual gearbox designed to shift gears automatically without a clutch pedal. According to Volkswagen, this combination offers the comfort of an automatic transmission and high-efficiency of a manual transmission.
How does the DSG work?
The DSG transmission can complete its fast shifts with two separate gear shafts and clutches that are controlled by the mechatronic unit. The mechatronic unit combines the electronic unit and the electro-hydraulic control unit as a single component. The mechatronics is the central control module of the transmission.
Safety Mechanism
Volkswagen integrated a parking lock into the DSG transmission to ensure that a parked vehicle does not roll away. The parking lock is controlled by a connecting cable and is engaged by shifting the gear selector in the “P” position. It is an excellent practice always to activate the emergency-brake no matter what kind of transmission your car is equipped.
DSG Transmission Maintenance
The Direct Shift Gearbox is a partially sealed unit that does not have a dip stick to check the fluid level. Service intervals are needed every 40,000 miles. The new fluid will help lubricate the dual-clutch, shafts, bearings, synchronizer rings, and all the other related parts inside the transmission, and will allow the correct operation of the DSG unit.
It is essential to know that the DSG transmission is very different than a traditional Automatic transmission; therefore, they feel different when driving, especially at lower gears.
Please comment and let me know if you have any experience driving vehicles equipped with DSG transmission.
