How to get a new car key if you have lost it
As most of you know, modern vehicles have a safety device (immobilizer) that prevents the engine from turning on with a brand new key from the dealer.
That said, if you run with the misfortune of having lost your only key, these are the steps you must follow to get a replacement.
3 Easy Steps.
-
- Go in person to your nearest authorized dealer with proof of ownership of the vehicle, identification or the driver’s license, and the serial number or VIN.
- Place the order and pay in advance, generally takes one to two days to arrive. The parts department will contact you when the key comes so you can open and tow your car to the dealer.
- Now the service department can program the new key to your car’s security system so that the engine can be turned on. The programming of the key takes about one hour.

Keep in mind that the entire procedure varies in time and price depending on the manufacturer. Some Dealers can make and program the same day. Contact your nearest service department for specific details.
